René Amstutz was born in Engelberg. After graduating from Winterthur Technical College, he studied chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, where he presented his thesis on organic chemistry. Postgraduate studies in the US and various management courses – in-house and at the Harvard Business School – completed his education.

After studying, René Amstutz began work in the Life Sciences sector, developing medications for a diverse range of pathologies and creating new technologies. An essential part of his work was centered on managing innovation and science in a constantly changing and highly competitive environment. For a number of years, he has advised startup companies and venture capital funds in the Life Sciences sector on questions of strategy, project selection and execution.

With nearly 30 years of professional experience in pharmaceutical research, Mr. Amstutz’s posts have included laboratory manager, group leader, and several executive positions at Novartis. His exceptional track record is a long list of successfully introduced pharmaceutical products, and the successful implementation and application of various new technologies. His professional experience also includes: the running of a biotech company, specializing in human antibodies against infectious diseases; management of a startup company and scientific advisory services to several biotech businesses.
