Subsidy schemes for geological CO2 storage development

Geological CO₂ storage (the permanent storage of CO₂ underground, also used in carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies) plays a crucial role in achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in Switzerland by 2050.

However, unlike in other countries, geological CO₂ storage is still at an early developmental stage in Switzerland. Outside of industry agreements, the deployment of CCS technologies — particularly the underground storage of CO₂ — faces structural challenges in Switzerland. As a result, private sector entities with the necessary expertise frequently lack the incentives to invest in geological CO₂ storage.

On behalf of the Federal Office of Energy, conim ag developed potential funding schemes aimed at creating incentives for private sector orientated entities to engage in geological CO₂ storage. The objective is to enable the establishment and utilisation of geological CO₂ storage infrastructure in Switzerland, laying a foundation for long-term effective measures for climate protection.
